TACHASH
Remembering ancient miracles to help us beautify our struggling emotional landscapes...
The TACHASH, a mythical creature which was initially described in Parashat Ki Thissa in the Book of Exodus, was divinely provided to the Israelites camping in the desert after their escape from Egypt. Its purpose was intended to be the source of materials for the construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle in the desert), a place to give and receive prayers/blessings/homage to and from God. Rabbinic commentary over the centuries have credited this creature with resembling a wide array of life forms from both land and sea. Since the Tachash was created exclusively for the construction of the Mishkan and seem to disappear after fulfilling its purpose, there does not seem to be agreement as to its appearance. From that perspective, I have drawn a version of this mystical creature that embodies characteristics of several animals suggested by the commentaries.
The TACHASH is shown among a gathering of princes from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. It is bearing a scroll presumably containing instructions for the Mishkan’s construction, an echo of which is a shadowy building in the clouds above.
Another interpretation of the TACHASH first appeared in my book BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH: A VISUAL TO COMMENTARY (Pomegranate, 2009).

As a creature of the collective imagination, its interpretation remains perpetually open to creative exploration.
